As 2025 draws to a close, we’re proud to share RCD’s latest milestones with you. This year, we’ve opened five affordable housing developments throughout the East Bay, bringing 446 new, permanently affordable homes to Berkeley, Concord, Emeryville, Fremont, and the unincorporated community of Ashland. By New Year’s Eve, we will have welcomed nearly 900 people into their new homes!
Each new home represents a fresh start. A mother who can finally give her children separate bedrooms and a quiet place to study. An older adult who no longer has to choose between paying rent and buying essential medication. A young family whose newfound stability allows them to plan their future beyond next month. Watching these residents settle into their homes and begin their next chapters fuels our commitment to this vital work. Your generous donation this holiday season will support RCD’s residents, community-serving programs, and efforts to build more affordable housing for our neighbors who need it most.
A few of RCD’s new residents graciously agreed to share their stories with you. Their words capture what numbers can’t. Here’s what home, and your support, means to them.
After her breast cancer diagnosis, Cat faced a whirlwind of surgeries just weeks before her move-in date. Now, settled into their new home at A link to: Madrone Terrace in Ashland, Cat and her service dog, Raya, are enjoying their new routines, and Cat is building a future that supports her health and recovery.
“I was diagnosed in April, and my first surgery was two weeks after I was supposed to move at the end of May.”
As Destini was preparing to return to her IRS job after maternity leave, the federal government shut down. Jessica, RCD’s Resident Services Coordinator at A link to: Rick Judd Commons in Concord, extended a lifeline to help Destini keep her family fed and housed until the shutdown ended.
“My maternity leave had ended, and money was drying up. I was late on my bills and my rent, so I reached out to Jessica.”
Luis, a retired Army veteran, entrepreneur, and computer engineer, spent much of the pandemic living in a van. Now, from his new home at A link to: Maudelle Miller Shirek Community in Berkeley, Luis is developing an electronic engineering course designed to inspire young people to explore careers in technology.
“Even living in the van is mostly not great. You’re protected from the elements, but you’re still terribly inconvenienced.”
