Neil Mayer Community

New construction of 54 rental homes in Berkeley

Neil Mayer Community at  A link to: 1740 San Pablo Ave. in Berkeley will provide 53 affordable homes for individuals and families, including 15 apartments for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and one unit for an on-site property manager. The development will include staff offices, a community room, an outdoor play area, a laundry room, and secure bike parking. RCD acquired this site with entitlements from BRIDGE Housing Corporation in late 2025, and we are excited to add it to our growing portfolio.

The name of this community holds special meaning for RCD. It is dedicated in memory of A link to: Neil Mayer, a beloved RCD co-founder and longtime ally and partner in our work. Later in his career, Neil was an active and influential member of RCD’s Board of Directors for several years. As Berkeley’s first Director of Economic Development and in his roles at the Congressional Budget Office and Urban Institute, Neil’s work shaped national and local policy in economics, housing, and community development. Neil passed away in 2022, and his legacy endures in many ways, including in RCD’s Community Development work across unincorporated Alameda County.

Resources for Community Development (RCD) and the John Stewart Company follow all reasonable accommodation laws and regulations as provided for in the Federal Fair Housing Act and California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act.
